United Legends

Nigel Cassidy 1945 - 2008

Nigel was brought to United from Scunthorpe United by manager Gerry Summers in November 1970 for a then club record fee of £20,000.
Nigel's swashbuckling performances made 'Cass' a cult hero with United's fans. He scored 33 goals in 113 starts and 3 substitute appearances.
In March 1974 Nigel transferred to Cambridge United for £28,000. At the end of the 1974/5 season Nigel went to play in the North American Soccer League with Denver Dynamos. Returning to Cambridge for the 1975/76 season Nigel was forced to retire from professional football in November with a serious Achilles tendon injury. Following his forced retirement, Nigel, who had taken a coaching course while at Cambridge tried his hand at management. He spent four years as player manager of Bicester Town and another two years at Banbury United, before finally quitting football to concentrate on his hotel business commitments.
Nigel went on to run The Black Bull in Bicester for ten years and the Shakespear in Bicester for three years.
He then moved to Wadebridge, where he owned and ran The Molesworth Arms Hotel until late 2006 when he finally decided to retire and sold the business to the St Austell Brewery.
Sadly Nigel passed away in May 2008 after a short illness following a trip to the USA. R.I.P. Nigel
